Description
In the latest IceCube Upgrade season, several new optical sensor modules were deployed as R&D prototypes for Gen2 of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Among them are three Fluorescent Optical Modules (FOMs), which use wavelength-shifting light collectors to absorb ultraviolet Cherenkov photons and re-emit them at visible wavelengths, which enhance the sensitivities of the photomultiplier tubes. In this talk, I will present the motivation for the FOM, its design and operating principles, and the performance of the Upgrade FOM prototypes in the ice.
