Description

IceCube has now detected the Galactic neutrino flux at 5.7$\sigma$ with an excess of in-ice particle shower events towards the inner Galaxy. We show that both the spectral and longitudinal distributions of the IceCube neutrinos can be explained by including contributions from Galactic $\gamma$-ray sources in addition to diffuse emission from the Galactic cosmic-ray sea. We test various resolved and unresolved source models and find that this conclusion is robust against uncertainties in source modeling. Motivated by these results, we search for a source component using ReGal-$\gamma$, a neutrino source template constructed from resolved Galactic $\gamma$-ray sources. We then present IceCube's sensitivity to distinguishing source-associated emission from the diffuse Galactic component.
