A general overview of the field, including expected skills of a data scientist.

10:30 → 11:30 Industry Terms & Lingo

Lots of data science jargon can be broken down into IceCube terms. We will go through some of the common terms and tools used in data science to make you more familiar and comfortable with the field.

11:30 → 12:00 Soft Skills

Overview of job posting websites, including tips for writing an appealing resume. Go through example resumes from industry professionals.

12:00 → 13:00 Lunch

13:00 → 14:30 Cloud Computing Overview

We will be working with AWS throughout the workshop. We will take this opportunity to introduce you to the platform and get you started.

14:30 → 17:00 Machine Learning Introduction

We will work through a few tutorials as a group. We will do simple exercises in image classification to make sure everyone is up to speed. Those with more experience can feel free to make the exercises more complicated.

We will go through examples of potential projects to complete over the next day. This should be something you can store on your GitHub and send to potential employers.

Pick a dataset to work with over the next day. Start making plots to tell a story. Keep the overall story in mind as you work on a project.

Robert Hellauer, Mike Richman, and Elim Thompson will discuss their experience applying for jobs in industry. Robert found a job in consulting through Insight. Mike and Elim applied directly for jobs in data science and software engineering, respectively.
